About the Artist:
Janice is honored to carry on the traditions of her Tsimshian ancestors through her art. By creating her artwork, she maintains an active role in reviving her Tsimshian culture that was once on the verge of being lost. Janice’s artwork not only connects her to her culture, but in sharing and teaching family members and the native urban members in the urban community it keeps alive the ancestors’ way of life and traditions.
Jainga-Lonergan is a traditional and contemporary Tsimshian weaver and artist. Her art ranges from traditional cedar bark weavings, Raven’s Tail and Chilkat weavings, to cooper metal creations, and more contemporary designs, in cedar, metal and beaded pieces. Her wide range of regalia creations include button robes, tunics, aprons, cedar woven hats, hayetsk (cooper shields), headbands, vests and moccasins.
She’s also an Indigenous teacher of gathering a variety of plant materials and demonstrates how to prepare these materials to be used for weaving, medicine and food. Janice has created and displayed artwork that aids in the education and awakening of indigenous social justice issues such as Walking With Your Sisters Campaign (WWOS) in Canada and the US, the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women/People (MMIW/P) issue, and the Residential Boarding Schools history and atrocities.
As an Urban Indigenous member she is committed to learning, teaching and supply resources to urban native youth, all urban indigenous and BIPOC members on sustainable energy resources, art resources, urban gardens & food sources. Janice mentors and shares indigenous knowledge, skills and education to improve urban subsistence. Janice also has a passion to gain and share indigenous knowledge to instill more civic education to all urban relatives on these issues to give strength to their rights and subsistence.
